Go to any website that allows comments. I’ll wait a second…
Notice something? Like the fact that most of the comments are negative? A lot of times the comments may start out positive, but in the end it usually goes to hell, no matter if you are on a webmasters blog, a blog about knitting, or whatever, people like to leave negative comments.
The question is: Do you want this kind of negativity on your site?
The answer is yes, yes you do.
I know that sounds a bit crazy, but lets think about it for a minute. What is happening when people are posting negative comments on your site? They are inviting other angry people to post, and then more people post disagreeing with the previous angry posters. Angry comments tend to get more reaction, i.e. comments. More comments means more pageviews, which usually translates into more money, and isn’t that the purpose of your website anyways?
Even if the negative comments are directed towards you, do not worry! You are still getting more traffic and more money, and if you have a nice loyal fan base, someone is sure to come to your defense. Now don’t go and attack those that are attacking you. You don’t want to stoop down to their level and alienate your readership, however you can politely prove them wrong.
So there you have it… negative comments could be a God-send. Now go ahead and post some negative comments about this post!

As long as comments on my blogs don’t stoop down to 4chan style immaturity, I let them stay. I just don’t want my site looking like its being overrun by 5th graders.
