Oh the website value calculator… These worthless things seem to spawn faster than the speed of light. They may be all over the internet, but that doesn’t mean that they have any real value. These things should never be taken seriously to judge the true value of your website.

Why Do They Suck?

Because they are notoriously inaccurate. As a test,  a little while ago I ran my site 4Layouts.com through a few of these “tools” to see what kind of results I got. The first result was something along the lines of $10,000. The second one gave me a value of about $125. The third said my site doesn’t exist (it does, really. I checked). All these checkers claimed to be reliable.

Website value calculators are based on algorithms that analyze several factors of your website including traffic, backlinks, domain age and more. These are certainly things to consider when calculating the value of your site, but they are not the only things to consider. You want to consider ad revenues, the amount of content, any and all costs associated with the website and what people are willing to pay for that kind of site. Website value calculators cannot accurately determine these statistics.

If you really want to get an idea of the value of your website, browse webmaster forums for similar sites for sale. Take a look to see what kind of content they have and how their traffic compares to your traffic. See what it sells for (not just the asking price, because they may ask too much and it won’t sell) and base your opinion on that. There are also professionals you can seek out that will asses your websites value for a small fee.

The Moral of the Story…

Website value calculators suck. They are completely inaccurate.
